Charity Porn?

December 28th 2008 14:28

Japan produces crazy things sometimes. This would be one of them: Charity Porn.

A Japanese producer of extreme pornography, Natural High, has embarked on a quest to save poor African orphans, by sending a porn star and a film crew to make “anthropological documentary” porn of the Japanese lady having sex with various tribesmen, with the proceeds earmarked for donation to the only aid organisation which would have anything to do with them.

...The AV producer gave [an aid agency that was near bankrupt supposedly] a million yen (interesting interpretation of “self help”, but let us leave that aside), and then sent them a porn star to help with the aid efforts, doling out corn, stationary, and building materials, in the usual ineffective manner.

They also munificently provided the aid recipients with T-shirts bearing the name of the AV production company, sparing not even the children their generosity.

To add further, it is said that with each DVD sold of this project, 1000 yen (about $10) will be donated to help aid impoverished Africans.

It's perhaps a little baffling to try to comprehend the concept of charity porn - let alone if its made in a country known for widespread STDs and other sexual-related problems.

So they are...

1) Spreading (free) advertisements in the form of t-shirts with company logos.

2) Declaring a portion of the profits will be donated to appeal to people's sympathy for the impoverished (while attempting to appeal to their sexual inclinations and hoping to increase sales in a highly competitive market).

How ironic. It seems that (despite the publicised good will of the producer) people seem to be benefiting by taking advantage of others. And since it's to some degree under the banner of "charity", it is allowed. Condoned perhaps.

The issue which I find prominent here is the concept of charity and what it truly means. In this context, I can't help but feel that it has become another marketing strategy.

wow never looked at charity's that way before!

but the idea of charity porn, as a mean's of generating profit for an aid's organisation... is like bombing for peace i think!!. and there apparent generosity with the kid's is morally upsetting.

woah, that's insane. you're right, it's probably all marketing, but you can't blame the Japanese for not coming up with original ideas.

I don't think starving Africans will really care where the money is coming from. Not dying is probably a little more important to them. Besides, a good deed is a good deed, even if done by pornographers, and no one can know their true motivation.
